 「全民英檢」主辦單位財團法人語言訓練測驗中心(LTTC)表示,根據民國100年的考生人數統計,總報考人次較99年成長10%,其中國中、高中職考生顯著增加

遇到有人做事馬虎、只知打混,總要罵他一聲:「很混耶!」


那麼「混」的英文要怎麼說呢?你可以說:You’re such a slacker!You’re always slacking off!這裡的slack本身就有「懈怠;馬虎」之意,名詞slacker自然就是「敷衍取巧者,偷懶者」。此外,你也可以簡單地用 lazy來表達內心的不滿:You’re so lazy.You’re such a lazy bone. 都是罵人好吃懶做的常用句。


例句:


A: I’m tired because I was busy all day… I’m going to rest now.


B:You’re such a slacker! You only typed two letters to clients, and you want to rest?


A:忙了一整天,好累喔。我要休息了。


B:你很混耶!你不過打了兩封給客戶的信,這樣就想休息?

天才賈伯斯十月五日過世,十月二十四日全球同步上市這本他生前唯一授權的「賈伯斯傳」。台灣也在同一天打出數十萬冊這本號稱是年度最暢銷的書,聲勢不輸哈利波特。 
賈伯斯一生充滿傳奇,歷經大起大落,就連這本傳記也充滿故事性。擔任作者的艾薩克森,曾經擔任過時代雜誌(Times)的總編輯與CNN的副總裁。他曾經寫過幾本相當不錯的傳記,包括<愛因斯坦傳>、<季辛吉傳>與<富蘭克林傳>等等。二年前,當賈伯斯第一次找他寫傳記時,艾薩克森認為這是一個成功企業家的沽名釣譽,竟一口回絕。但是後來艾薩克森聽說賈伯斯不久人世、來日無多,於是才答應接下這個邀請。 
艾薩克森之所以願意執筆,除了50次左右的訪談,最重要的條件是賈伯斯答應他可以訪問任何想要訪問的人 – 包括昔日情人與敵人,而且出版前不需給賈伯斯過目。賈伯斯說:「我一生或許有一些不光彩的事,…但是卻沒有不可告人的事。」 → “I’ve done a lot of things I’m not proud of,…But I don’t have any skeletons in my closet that can’t be allowed out.” 
“skeleton in the closet”,skeleton是「骷髏」,「衣櫃裡的骷髏」是指「不可外揚的家醜」。 
讀英文版「賈伯斯傳」是要訓練同學的英文閲讀能力,尤其是長篇文章的閱讀能力。雖然基本上多益測驗是沒有長篇閲讀的,即使最長的Part 7的Double Reading(雙篇閱讀)也只是將近千字的文章,但是在準備多益測驗的同學,一定是從閱讀比測驗題更長的文章來累積閱讀的耐心與能力,才能應付測驗時的試場壓力以求取高分。更何況在真實的國際職場裡,閱讀長篇的英文合約、英文的產品市場分析報告、英文的會議紀綠等等,在在都需要英文長篇閱讀能力。 
許多同學拿到六百多頁的英文版「賈伯斯傳」,通常第一句話是問:「我的單字不夠,沒辦法看英文書!」英文字彙要學多少才夠?八千字?、一萬字? 一萬五千字? 還是兩萬字?其實不要讓英文字彙阻礙了你閱讀的興趣!就算英文讀了十年、二十年,也還是會有不認識的字彙,尤其在分工這麼細的今天,每個行業都有特殊名詞,比方說” margin”這個英文字,在出版業指的是「頁面邊緣的空白處」,在經濟學裡指的是「邊際效應」,在會計界又指得是「毛利」- 你可需要很多年才能通曉這三種字義,但是不要讓字彙絆住你!所以在讀英文版「賈伯斯傳」之前,先要把「英文字彙」這個干擾因素放下、先把英文字典和電子詞典(翻譯機)收起來! 
不查英文字典要如何讀英文版「賈伯斯傳」呢?你一定聽過略讀(skimming)的觀念!做英文長篇閱讀時,一定要運用「略讀」的方法;「略讀也者,瀏覽、不經意地看過、只掌握文意大綱是也!」。「略讀」是快速地看過文句,以得到一個主要論點的印象,而不是一字一句地精讀、細讀。多益測驗的出題單位ETS,其英文學習專家們說,增強英文能力要: 
→ Practice skimming a passage quickly to get a general impression of the main idea, instead of carefully reading each word and each sentence 
根據人類在寫作時的思維理哲,寫作的人若是要強論一個論點時,這位作者會「返覆申說」,因此讀者可以從前後文中不同的遣詞用字來了解文意。在作英文長篇閱讀時,要學習從作者舉的例證、做的比較、引述的話語、衍伸的推論等等,來了解文意,這是略讀的精神。就如同前述,即使你不知道“skeleton in the closet” 是家醜的特定說法,但從“skeleton in the closet that can’t be allowed out” 應可猜出這是指不可告人之事。ETS的英文學習專家們說,閱讀的技巧是: 
→ Choose some unfamiliar words in the passage and guess the meaning from the context (surrounding sentences); then, look them up to determine their meaning
 (在閱讀的篇章中,從不熟悉的字中選擇重要的,從前後文中猜一下,然後再查字典) 
這種略讀的精神也與多益測驗的出題單位ETS,在出題的哲學上不謀而合,因為多益測驗在第七部份(Part 7)的篇章閱讀常會問你:
 What is the purpose of this letter? (此信目的是什麼?) 
What can be inferred about Ms. Smith? (關於Smith女士,可以推論出什麼?) 
What is suggested about Mr. Brown in this memo? (這封公文中,可以得知Brown先生什麼事?)
 What is the goal of this organization? (這個組織的目標是什麼?) 
What is the main idea of this report? (此報告的主旨是什麼?)
 Part 7常以”suggest”、”imply”、”infer” 這三個字來問你這篇文章的意涵,這種題型在45分鐘左右要答完Part 7的48題的時間配當下,是不可能用逐字逐句的精讀法完成,而應採用「略讀法」,所以要看英文版「賈伯斯傳」作練習。
 賈伯斯傳奇的一生,早已流傳在人間。比方說,他出生後就被領養、二十歲出頭即成立蘋果公司、三十歲不到就身價兩億、被自己創立的蘋果公司逐出、接手大導演喬治魯卡斯的皮克斯(Pixar)動畫公司進入好萊塢(Hollywood)電影界、班師回朝蘋果、以智慧型手機iPhone與平板電腦iPad大戰群雄等等。這些故事其實世人早已耳熟能詳。讀英文版「賈伯斯傳」的時候,在已經知道故事背景的情況下,更能欣賞英文的文字之美而不用受制於故事發展的干擾。在讀完每個故事段落,可以試著找出主要大意,ETS的英文學習專家們強調這種練習: 
→ Practice making inference and drawing conclusions based on what is implied in the passage as a whole
 (練習從文章整體的隱含義之中,做推論與結論) 
艾薩克森的這本「賈伯斯傳」,沒有小說裡過度修飾的長句,文字適中而不艱澀繞口;許多書中的句子是引述自訪談的對話,所以都淺顯易懂。書中的許多故事發生在職場,對於以國際職場溝通能力為導向的多益測驗,英文版「賈伯斯傳」不論在聽、說、讀、寫上,都是好教材。

Who you calling bird brain? Pigeons can count as well as monkeys, claims study
 你說誰沒腦袋?研究宣稱鴿子數數能力和猴子一樣好



We already knew that they are rather good at finding their way home. But it seems that pigeons have another remarkable talent – they can count.
我們已經知道牠們相當擅長找到回家的路。但鴿子似乎有另一項了不起的才能:他們能數數。
Until now, only humans and other primates were thought to be able to use abstract numerical rules in this way.
在此之前,只有人類和其他靈長類被認為能夠以這種方式使用抽象數字規則。
The researchers initially trained the pigeons by presenting them with 35 sets of three images, each with one, two, or three objects of different size, colour and shape. They were rewarded with wheat when they pecked the images in the correct ascending sequence.
研究人員先給鴿子看35組影像,每組有3張影像,呈現1個、2個或3個不同尺寸、顏色和形狀的物體,訓練牠們。當牠們以正確的從小到大的順序啄這些影像,就會獲得麥子當獎賞。
Next, they were presented with pairs of images with between one and nine objects and tested on their ability to respond to them in ascending order.

’Somewhat surprisingly, their performance is on a par with that of monkeys,’ said Dr Damian Scarf, of the University of Otago in New Zealand.

somewhat:副詞,稍微、有點;或當代名詞,某事/物、幾分,後接of。例句:I’m somewhat upset about your attitude.(你的態度令我有點不爽。)
give the lie to:片語,揭穿謊言、不正確或不真實之事,反駁。例句:The government’s statistics gave the lie to it’s own claims of economic boom.(政府的統計數據反駁了政府自己宣稱經濟繁榮的說法。)

Hello, my name is Holly and I'm a ESL teacher. I come from the UK and I have been teaching in Taiwan for one year. That year has been thoroughly enjoyable for me and as well as teaching experience I have an 80 hour online TEFL certificate and a 20 hour practical certificate which I got before I went to Taiwan.
哈囉,我是霍莉(Holly),同時,也是一個 ESL教師。我來自英國,在台灣從事英文教學已屆滿一年,這一年對我來說,過得相當愉快,此外,在來到台灣前,我獲取80小時線上的TEFL證書和20小時的實習證書,有著豐富的教學經驗。
So I started my teaching career in Kindergarten which was great fun and incredibly rewarding. It gave me a good first step into teaching and a great understanding of just how different age groups and levels learn. I then went on to teach between the ages of 7 and 17. This enabled me to understand a wide spectrum of student's levels. So through a variety of sentence making games, songs, spelling activities and various other activities, the children had great fun in the classroom and were unaware of how much English they were actually learning. I believe I am always dedicated to teach individual students and ensure they fully understand the lesson and grasped the different language points we have talked about.
於是我開始在幼兒園展開我的教學生涯,這是非常有趣和令人難以置信的報償。它給了我一個良好的第一步,讓我在不同年齡和各級學習間的教學得到許多的啟發。
接著,我持續指導過7~17歲之間的學生,這使我明白在廣泛學生的學習程度。因此,透過遊戲、唱歌、拼寫等其他各種活動,都能讓孩子們在課堂上帶來學習樂趣,即使英文懂得不多,但實際上,他們已在活動中學習英文。
我相信,我一直致力於個別教學,我們會進一步作討論,以確保每位是否學生充分了解教學內容及掌握不同的語言觀點。
I have graduated from university and did so with honors in visual culture. My artistic background has helped influence my teaching style as I always use colors in the classroom and also visual aids to help students learn. I also think I am creative within my thinking and if there is ever a problem, I can solve it effectively and as quickly as possible. I believe that variety is the key to any success and my personality will bring professionalism, patience and playfulness to any type of teaching.
我從大學畢業,並在視覺文化獲得優異成績。我的藝術背景讓我在教學上別具一格,因為我會在課堂上運用色彩來加深印象,幫助學生學習。

As I have said, I am from the UK and after a year of teaching I understand the slight differences between American English and British English. Because of that, I am fully able to teach American English or British English. That would depend on specific preference which I am more than willing to fulfill. So I hope you can see that my passion for teaching and for helping others will reflect in my work and my previous experience has meant that I can make learning an enjoyable experience for any level of English.

   教學值得信賴的的吉爾老師 (Teacher Gilles)
        
Hello, my name is Gilles. I come from the UK. I have an 80 hour online TEFL certificate and have completed a 20 hour practical teaching course. I have been teaching English for one year in Changhua City, Taiwan to various age groups. These age groups range from 7 to 16 years old. My main objective with the younger children was to help them with their pronunciation as it was a new language to them and to help build their confidence to speak the language freely. With the other children, especially those who studied GEPT, I helped them with their comprehension, their sentence making, their idioms and obviously their pronunciation also. In my teaching job, I taught a variety of subjects all in English such as science, social studies and geography. We also put on dramatisations and plays which I helped choreograph and write scripts for. There were also CDs which I recorded for my company to help the children learn and pronounce when I was not in the classroom. I think this showed a good deal of trust from my employer and good ability in teaching.
哈囉!我是吉爾(Gilles)。我來自英國,我已取得80小時線上的英語教學證書,並已完成了20小時的實習教學課程。
我從事英語教學已經一年囉!主要在台灣彰化市教學,針對各年齡組的學生,範圍從 7歲到16歲皆有。
針對小朋友,我主要的教學目標是幫助他們的發音,因為對於孩子來說,英文是一門新的語言,這將幫助他們建立信心,並能夠自在的發言。此外,我也研究全民英 檢(GEPT),幫助他們加強對該考試的理解力,還有英文造句、成語以及發音。
在我的教學工作中,我教了許多科目(全英文),像是科學、社會和地理。此外,我也會協助編舞、寫腳本來和學生一起演出一段戲劇。這也會透過CD來作記錄,而當我不在課堂上時,學生就能藉此來幫助學習,這是與雇主建立在信任和良好的教學能力上一個很好的協議。
My teaching qualities: I would say I am a very patient teacher and I am able to come up with a variety of techniques to enable the students to comprehend what I am teaching or how to pronounce the words I am teaching. Usually giving a variety of examples or simplifying what is being taught is the best way to get them to understand. With pronunciation, I have found that repetition and disecting the word is usually the best way. I also created and conducted many oral tests which I then graded and commented on. I also graded many compositions and sentence making exercises.
I am a very outgoing person and I feel this is reflected in my teaching style. I have lots of fun in the classroom with my students but I always make sure they understand the lesson and get the most out of it.
若你問我的教學特色:我會說我是個很有耐心的老師,我能夠提供不同的方法來幫助學生理解我的教學內容以及如何發音。通常我會給予各種範例或者簡單化我所教的,讓他們能夠更清楚的理解。
針對發音,我發現持續重覆和仔細分析這個詞通常是最好的辦法。此外,我會對學生進行口語測試,透過分級和評論來了解學生的學習狀況。
我是個相當的外向、隨和的人,這會反映在我的教學風格上,因此在我的課堂上定會帶給學生很多的樂趣,但我總會時時確認學生們是否能夠吸收課堂所教。
Although I am from the UK, both schools I have taught in use American English so I have a full understanding in both the spelling and of course the pronunciation. I would completely leave it up to my employer, or in the case of one to one teaching, the student, as to whether they would prefer to learn British (UK) English or American English.
I feel I am trustworthy and reliable and I hope that together we can make earning English both fun and enjoyable. Thank you very much for listening.

形容人看不清事情真相或識人不清時,常說這人「被蛤蜊肉抹到眼睛」,
英文可以說:「Are you blind?」(你瞎了嗎?)
「Can’t you see?」(你難道認不清真相嗎?)
You’re walking around with your eyes closed.(你閉著眼睛趴趴走喔),
當然也可以直截了當地說:「Open your eyes.」要對方睜大眼睛,看清真相。
A: Eric’s nice and he’s rich—I don’t understand why you don’t like him!
B: Are you blind? He’s a liar and a cheat!
A:阿瑞人好又多金,真不知妳為什麼不喜歡?
B:妳的眼睛抹到蛤蜊肉了嗎?他根本就是一個愛說謊的騙子!
