A US doctor is trying to pioneer a laser treatment that changes patients’ eye colour. Dr Gregg Homer claims 20 seconds of laser light can remove pigment in brown eyes so they gradually turn blue. He is now seeking up to $750,000 of investment to continue clinical trials.
However, other eye experts urge caution because destroying eye pigment can cause sight problems if too much light is allowed to enter the pupil.
The process involves a computerised scanning system that takes a picture of the iris and works out which areas to treat. The laser is then fired, hitting one spot of the iris at a time. When it has hit every spot it then starts again, repeating the process several times.
After the first week of treatment, the eye colour turns darker as the tissue changes its characteristics. Then the digestion process starts, and after a further one to three weeks the blueness appears. Since the pigment - called melanin - does not regenerate the treatment is irreversible.

Singapore’s SingTel has developed an application to rival the voice-activated Siri on the iPhone 4S that is sure to go down well in the island state -- because it can understand "Singlish".
When Apple unveiled its latest handset earlier last month most of the talk was about Siri, which can give directions or even advice to users simply by asking a question into the speaker.
However, since the new phone went on sale there have been numerous reports of Siri either responding with a completely irrelevant answer or simply saying it does not understand.
But Singapore Telecom (SingTel) says its new app, DeF!ND, will help Singaporeans who use "Singlish" -- a localised form of English with words borrowed from Asian languages -- avoid such problems.
“We have a voice application capability in DeF!ND that is unique because it understands the local language... which the voice recognition engine within an international device like Apple doesn’t quite have,” SingTel Singapore chief executive Allen Lew said after the launch.
“When we tried to test different voice recognition systems including... Siri, we found that the Singaporean accent is pretty unique and the common international voice recognition systems don’t quite pick up the nuance of how we speak,” Lew added.

Thailand’s worst floods in five decades are bearing down on the capital just as the high season for tourism gets under way, putting this year’s official target of 19 million visitors in doubt, government and tourist officials said on Tuesday.

While Bangkok is braced for the worst, Phuket, Pattaya and Samui, Thailand’s biggest draw cards for tourists, have escaped the deluge that has swamped central and northern provinces, including the ancient city of Ayutthaya.

Most of Bangkok’s tourist attractions and shopping areas have not been affected by flooding but the Chao Phraya river that winds through the city is high and canals have burst their banks in some northern districts.

“ We had a good number of bookings earlier this year but from this point on, if the floods get worse, we expect a drop of at least 20 percent. There have already been cancellations in some markets, like Taiwan, ” president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents(ATTA)said. “ India, Russia and mainland China are still coming. But Europe less and less. ”

Eating lots of fruit and vegetables with white flesh may help to protect
against strokes, says a study in the journal Stroke. But Dutch researchers say
they do not know why people with a high intake of apples, pears, bananas or
cauliflower reduce their risk of stroke by 52%.
The study followed more than 20,000 adults over 10 years. Stroke experts said
people should not be put off eating other colours of fruit and veg. At the start
of the study, carried out in The Netherlands, participants were asked to fill in
a detailed questionnaire on diet and lifestyle for the previous year.
By using this information and tracking the health of participants over the
next decade, researchers were able to examine the link between the colour of
fruit and vegetables consumed and stroke risk. The study found that a 25g per
day increase in white fruits and vegetables was linked to a 9% lower risk of
stroke.

Of the white fruit and veg eaten, over half was apples and pears. But no link
was found between stroke incidence and green(dark leafy vegetables, cabbages and

The wandering emperor penguin, who was nursed back to health after being found hundreds of miles from home on a New Zealand beach, was released back into the ocean last week.

But a GPS transmitter attached to him, so that his progress could be tracked back into Antarctic waters, stopped working last Friday - about half way to his destination in the Southern Ocean.
Experts said that while it is possible the device fell off and is sitting at the bottom of the ocean while Happy Feet continues safely on his journey, they fear he could also have met his fate in the jaws of a larger creature.
In an statement, Sirtrack, the company that attached the transmitter, told the New Zealand Herald that the lack of signal ’leads to the conclusion that either the satellite transmitter has detached or an unknown event has prevented Happy Feet from resurfacing’.

Lions ’more likely to eat people after a full moon’
Other predators, such as wolves, may also be at their most dangerous when the
moon starts to wane.
The discovery, from an
African study of 500 lion attacks, could explain the full moon’s place in
folklore as a harbinger of evil or disaster, and its association with werewolves
and
vampires.
Scientists
studied records of nearly 500 lion attacks on Tanzanian villagers between 1988
and 2009. In more than two thirds of cases, the victims were killed and eaten.
The vast majority of attacks occurred between dusk and 10pm on nights when the
moon was waning and providing relatively little
light.
Lions
hunt most successfully when darkness allows them to surprise their prey, but on
bright moonlit nights they might have to go hungry. The period immediately
following a full moon provides a lion with a welcome opportunity to catch up on
missed
meals.
Lion
attacks also increased during the rainy season, when the moon was more likely to
be obscured by clouds.
"Although we
are safest from lion attacks during well-lit nights, the full moon accurately
indicates that the risks of lion predation will increase dramatically in the
coming days. Thus the full moon is not dangerous in itself but is instead a
portent of the darkness to come." said the
scientists.

Maltese police found the poor dog buried in a shallow grave. She had been shot 40 times in the head with a pellet gun and her snout was tied to prevent her from barking in pain.
